Ruby is one of the finest of a small number of contemperary Zia potters. She was taught to pot by her mother, Seferina Bell, who was one of the best Zia potters of the mid-20th century. One hundred years ago, Zia was a prolific potting pueblo producing many fine and large pieces. Today, there are probably fewer than 20 active potters. Virtually all of them however, still work in the characteristically traditional Zia style which has changed little in over a century. Ruby Panana now lives at Jemez Pueblo due to marriage, but her pottery represents the finest characteristics of the timeless Zia style.
